What are the best thermostat settings for winter?

During winter, there’s a problem every energy-conscious homeowner encounters around this time: what’s the best thermostat setting? What will keep you comfortable without busting a hole in your bank account?

CW Suter Services is here to help! With almost a century of experience, you can count on us to keep your home comfortable & healthy. We’ve handled heating equipment for many years and know how to properly set up a comfy, cost-effective home.

How to Adjust Your Thermostat in the Winter

So how could you save the most this winter when it comes to thermostat settings? Set your thermostat to 65 and pull out your sweatshirts and blankets! However, we realize this may not be the most comfortable for you and your family. There is no number that is perfect for everyone, but there are some ranges that are acceptable for most:

  • Your best-case for savings is around 68 – If you’re going to be gone for a while you can set it even lower. But make sure you do NOT go below 65 as that can cause serious issues with your furnace.
  • Your ideal compromise is around 71- This temperature is where most homeowners feel comfortable. If this is still too cold for you, set your fans to run clockwise. This forces the warm air back down into your rooms, improving the relative warmth of your home by multiple degrees.

Keep in mind that each degree you increase your thermostat, represents an astonishing 15% or so of increased energy use. There is a massive difference over the course of the winter months, so finding an acceptable range on both fronts can be challenging.

What is the best solution to your thermostat dilemma? Programmable thermostats. These thermostats can follow your routines and adjust according to your daily habits, tastes, and savings needs. There are a variety of programmable thermostats with different features. Some features include: compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant, active monitoring of system operations, reminder to change your filter, allergen defender, and an app to stay in complete control of your thermostat. These thermostats are designed to maximize the efficiency of your HVAC system.
