The Winner of our Ugliest furnace contest

Our Ugliest Furnace Contest is complete. We had many submissions and wish we could have more than one winner. Our lucky winner, Nancy Kolker in Sioux City, Iowa, had her new equipment installed just in time for the holiday season. She wont have to worry about staying warm this winter! We have some before and after pictures from the ugliest furnace in Siouxland to one that will last her for years to come.

The contest

When we started the ugliest furnace contest we knew we would come across a lot of old and ugly equipment. We received hundreds of entries ranging from about 10 years old to furnaces that were possibly around 80-100 years old. We had around five entries that consisted of very old octopus furnaces that took up a ton of space and were covered in asbestos. We went out and checked on the final three entries to get a better idea of the HVAC situation. Having an old and inefficient system can bring many issues and dangers, especially if it isn’t regularly and properly serviced.

The winner

We chose three final entries, and had a committee decide on the ugliest furnace in Siouxland. Nancy was the winner after much debate. Nancy is the owner of a very old and very inefficient octopus that was in need of replacement. It’s a big gravity furnace from the 1950’s. She even said, “This old octopus needs to go to the Davey Jones Locker. I worry every year if it’s going to make it through the winter.”

The new, installed Carrier furnace

Nancy was extremely happy to hear that she was the winner of the Ugliest Furnace Contest. It took us a full day to remove her ugly furnace and another half day to finish installing her new, Carrier furnace. This new furnace is properly sized to fit her home and her needs. It is a single-stage gas furnace that is 95% efficient. We also installed a new thermostat to go along with the energy efficient furnace. This new HVAC equipment will heat her home properly and also more efficiently. Old equipment not only struggles to work at times, but it also uses more energy to get the job done. The result of this is much higher energy bills than necessary. It’s another reason to make sure your equipment is properly maintained, especially if it’s an old and outdated HVAC system.

This new programmable thermostat allows Nancy to program her home and away hours, so when she’s home she will be comfortable. On the other hand, when she’s away the temperature lowers and she’s saving as much as possible. A programmable thermostat is a great way to save on your heating bill as it allows the temperature to fluctuate throughout the day while also providing maximum comfort.

Thank you to everyone who entered our contest. We look forward to continuing this contest for years to come. Be on the lookout for the next contest coming soon in the Spring.
