Building the Future: How Our In-House HVAC & Plumbing Apprenticeship Program Is Powering the Next Generation

At CW Suter Services, we understand that the future of the skilled trades lies in training the next generation. That’s why we’ve built a robust, in-house apprenticeship program focused on HVAC and plumbing — not only to address the growing labor shortage in the trades, but also to ensure our customers continue to receive the high-quality service they’ve come to expect.

Suter University’s Creation

Our in-house apprenticeship program was established in 2004. In 2008, the US Department of Labor certified CW Suter Services and Suter University as a registered Apprenticeship Program. This recognition means that Suter U is able to provide even greater career opportunities to students.

We provide a hands-on learning experience that is tailored to provide the best training in the trades. Our instructors are Suter employees who are licensed Journeyman who can give real world knowledge and provide a one-on-one relationship with each student. We currently have 81 students enrolled in the program and a very high success rate of students passing the test and receiving their journeyman’s license. We have two training locations, one in Sioux City and another in Spirit Lake.

A Hands-On Pathway to a Meaningful Career

Our apprenticeship program offers a structured, hands-on learning experience for individuals who are eager to start a career in HVAC and plumbing. Unlike traditional trade school models, our in-house program combines real-world jobsite exposure with classroom instruction, led by experienced technicians and licensed journeymen who are passionate about passing on their knowledge.

Apprentices are paid while they learn, allowing them to earn a living wage from day one — a significant advantage for young professionals looking for a debt-free path to a rewarding career.

Attracting and Investing in the Next Generation

We’ve found that offering a clear, supported pathway from apprentice to licensed journeyman has helped us successfully attract younger employees, including recent high school graduates and career changers. Many are drawn to the opportunity to work with modern tools and technologies, gain skills they can use for life, and be part of a team that truly values craftsmanship and growth.

By investing in our apprentices early and giving them the opportunity to grow with us, we’re not only strengthening our workforce — we’re helping to reshape the image of the trades as a smart, stable, and fulfilling career choice.

Increasing Our Team of Licensed Journeymen

One of the most tangible benefits of our apprenticeship program is the growing number of licensed journeymen on our team. With a steady pipeline of trained talent coming through our ranks, we’re able to promote from within and ensure that our workforce meets and exceeds industry standards.

This has allowed us to take on larger projects with confidence, maintain top-tier service across all customer touchpoints, and continue expanding without compromising on quality.

A Culture of Learning and Loyalty

Apprenticeship is more than just training — it’s about culture. Our program fosters mentorship, teamwork, and long-term loyalty. Many of our senior technicians today started as apprentices, and they’re now mentoring the next wave of talent. This continuity has helped us build a strong, reliable team that shares the same values and commitment to excellence.

Final Thoughts

At CW Suter Services, we’re not just filling jobs — we’re building careers. Our HVAC and plumbing apprenticeship program is helping shape the future of our company and our industry by providing a completely free 4 year program to those interested in the trades. By equipping young professionals with the skills and support they need, we’re ensuring that our customers — and our team — continue to benefit for years to come.
